The exhibition focuses on relations between the science-based mindset of the 21st century and so-called transcendental phenomena. It aims at addressing issues about the concept of spirituality, which is often interpreted as a cover term that includes any themes that deal with reaching a non-materialistic, intangible existence. To do so Szendrő’s show takes a critical viewpoint and examines various traditional religious rituals. The artworks on display are re-interpretations of various classical religious rituals.
The visitor is guided through the exhibition space, which provides the experience of an initiation process. Its first part reflects on the paradox of the idea that one may proceed in their life by creating a purgatory-like space, while in the second part of the show the artworks are to be interpreted as religious pieces carrying transcendental meaning as a result of the religiously themed space, and the visitors are enabled to create their own personal religious ritual.
