VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
(a magyar változat elérhető itt)

Our current show entitled ‘Tupperware now and then’ focuses on how people relate to the objects that surround them through juxtaposing the attitude of previous generations, that is thrift motivated reuse of objects, and the popularity of cute, but unnecessary products of today. (The exhibited artworks as well as the concept of the show can be viewed HERE). The group show was opened by Dóra Kocsis, the founder of Simplicity Festival and the author of a zero-waste blog. Her speech was centred around the concept of voluntary simplicity. Simple living is defined against the rules of consumer society and as part of this lifestyle decisions are made with simplicity in mind and with environmental impacts taken into account.

The selection reflects on simple living by displaying artworks which deal with simple pleasures. All the artworks are made by MyMuseum artists. Marcell Piti’s series entitled ‘Public Image’ includes Google Street photos from 5 different world cities. The selected pieces from the series show real life situations in which the participants (consciously or not, voluntarily or not) experience everyday moments of joy through slowing down, paying attention to each other. Ákos Rajnai’s videos entitled ‘Contemplative Video Series’ present the meditative beauty of nature, while in the centre of Tibor Nagy’s ‘Kinetic Light’ video works are constructions made by humans. Nagy’s compositions represent minimalism in today’s digital world, as the motion of handmade models are filmed. Zoltán Vadászi’s video series entitled ‘1/0’ concentrates purely on life’s tiniest element of life, which is invisible for bare eyes: air. Similarly to Rajnai’s works they are meditative pieces, but they are in contrast with Nagy’s works because of the complex technical background, as Vadászi used CT, MRI and ultrasound images for his works.

With our first selection we aim to provide a digital show for those who are in search of relaxing, but at the same time thought-provoking artworks, wish to wind down and contemplate on simple forms, phenomena and questions. We topped the fact that the perception of art gives simple pleasure, and selected pieces that concentrate on simple beauty and concentrated attention themselves.
